Why take lessons

Whether you are starting cycling from scratch, returning after a gap, or are unclear about how to best ride on roads, tuition is well advised. You may be surprised at how much there is to learn!

We need more cyclists so we become a more usual presence on the road, which will make the activity safer. To cycle competently on roads, we need skills and knowledge which are not always self-evident. It’s a myth that everyone knows how to ride a bike and that you “never forget it”. Don’t think you have to do it all yourself. Getting tuition is wise – I would not embark on teaching myself to ski without instruction!

A personal encouragement

As an adult learner myself I have empathy with people who are starting to cycle later in life. It is often assumed that everyone rides a bike in childhood and that that ability lasts a lifetime. Many people do not learn in early life for a variety of reasons, so there’s no reason to feel embarrassed if you are starting from scratch whatever your age. Rather congratulate yourself for taking this positive step. I understand how fear may stop you doing things you want to do so it may take a lot of courage to come for lessons but it will be well rewarded.
